Raising Children in a Bilingual Russian-English-speaking Family, Part II Parent workshop with Professor Isabelle Barriere, PhD.

Tuesday, November 1^st, 6:30-8:00pm

Park Slope Jewish Center

(Corner of 8^th Avenue and 14^th Street)

Dr. Isabelle Barriere continues the discussion on raising children in a bilingual home, providing clever insights, research and best practices on fostering successful and long-term bilingual developments specifically targeted for Russian-English speaking Jewish families.

Learn:

·        *  Early milestones in language acquisition in monolingual and bilingual development, with a focus on English/Russian and English/Hebrew bilingual families.

·      *  Literacy in two languages using books, technology and games.

·       * Parental strategies that foster bilingual development at different stages - from infancy through school readiness.

·       * Take-home strategies you can implement immediately.

Lecture followed by a Q & A session

Dr. Barriere is Assistant Professor of Speech Communication Arts & Science at Brooklyn College, where she teaches courses in Language Development and Dual Language Learning. Her research focuses on the acquisition of language, bilingual development, early literacy, typical and impaired development and intervention. Dr. Barriere is also a research associate of the Research Institute for the Study of Language in Urban Society and co-director of Yeled V'Yalda Research Institute, located in the largest Head Start program in New York.

Space is limited and registration is required.

Shabbat Sukkot Brunch at FEZ Art Café

Enjoy a relaxing Shabbat brunch, Mimosas and all the dessert you can handle with other Russian speaking families from the neighborhood.  

Fran Manushkin author of adorable children’s books Tushy and Many Days, One Shabbat, as well as many others, will be joining us for some nosh and story time. 

Plus, we’ll have a toddler arts table, baby crawling spot and parent relaxing space J . 

Delicious food, amazing children’s author, great company, mimosas! What more can you ask for?

Oh yea, and learn about the traditions of Sukkot, why we eat in a hut, why this is such a joyous holiday, how it’s really about not being materialistic and what this all has to do with us.
